100th Running of the Detroit Gold Cup

Miss GEICO Gears Up to Claim Gold Cup Title in Detroit

07.11.08

Detroit, MI – Miss GEICO, one of the world’s fastest offshore powerboats, will give new meaning to Detroit’s moniker “The Motor City” with show stopping performances during the 100th annual American Powerboat Association Detroit Gold Cup Hydroplane races this weekend.

A century-long tradition of top-notch competition culminates with a record number of race teams due to participate. Miss GEICO’s stellar performance has set the tone for the nation’s offshore circuit throughout the season and will distinguish this weekend’s races as ones to watch. Racing for the coveted Garwood Trophy, the op prize in its class, is a top priority for the preeminent Miss GEICO team.

“The Garwood Trophy is one of the industry’s most coveted crowns,” said Miss GEICO Driver Marc Granet. “We’re looking forward to kicking up monster wakes in the heart of the Great Lakes Region. Offshore racing is a standard of summer in Michigan. Fans show up for the Detroit race in great force. We’re going to return their loyalty to our sport with a race worth watching and waiting for.”

The 2008 season has come to be known as the “Year of the Turbine” – and with good reason. Miss GEICO’s twin turbine engines have propelled the flagship team to a series of claims to the season’s most prestigious checkered flags. But, the race to the winner’s circle has been a contentious one. “This year we’re seeing our competition step up in ways we’ve not seen before,” said Throttleman Scotty Begovich. “Everybody’s moving with more skill, speed and intensity. We love it. When others step up their game it makes us take the best to even better heights,” he said.

Determined to demonstrate the might behind their marine monster, Driver Granet and Throttleman Scotty Begovich, the Gladiators who guide Miss GEICO from her space age cockpit, combine years of experience with an unwavering drive to win and commitment to the sport. The result: awe-inspiring races that top out at speeds of 200 miles per hour.  “You don’t reach this level of intensity overnight,” Begovich said. “The few minutes we’re on the water are the result of years of training, vision and investment. It all boils down to about two minutes of heart stopping action and the countless hours of preparation are worth every second.”

Details on the APBA Detroit Gold Cup: New attractions and longer hours of operation increase the summertime fun for race fans. Friday, July 11, is “Free Friday,” with the racecourse open until 6:30 p.m. The races take place on the Detroit River race course near Belle Isle, recognized worldwide as the premier site for hydroplane boat racing.
